San Diego Legion Signs Mexican Rugby Player Alejandro Pradillo

San Diego Legion is excited to announce the signing of Alejandro Pradillo, the first Mexican player in Major League Rugby (MLR) history. Born in Mexico City and raised in the State of Mexico, Alejandro discovered his passion for rugby at Greengates School at the age of 13. After years of representing Mexico at both youth and senior levels, he’s thrilled to join the Legion as a prop and inspire the next generation of Mexican rugby players. Pradillo said, “Becoming the first Mexican player in MLR is a dream come true. I want to inspire others and show that anything is possible with hard work and dedication.”

In doing so, we are not only making history by signing the first Mexican MLR player, but we are also gaining a valuable asset for our squad. Alejandro is a strong, experienced rugby player who can scrum on both sides. He has a huge passion for improvement and a love of the scrum, which is non-negotiable for a prop here at the Legion. Pradillo will make history as the first Mexican player in MLR.

Alejandro Pradillo’s Rugby Career

Alejandro Pradillo began playing rugby at the age of 13 at Greengates International School, where he won the U16 and U19 categories in the Mexican Rugby Tournament. Following his early rugby experience in Mexico, Pradillo traveled to England to compete against the winners of the London region's college tournaments, earning MVP honors for Greengates School.

He represented Mexico on the U16 and U19 national teams in Rugby 15’s, competing in the Rugby Americas North League Championship, where he was named the best forward for two consecutive years.

Pradillo took his first steps in professional rugby with Wallabies RFC of Mexico at the age of 16, where he helped the team win five national championships between 2008 and 2013. He was also offered a scholarship to Hartpury College in the United Kingdom to study Sports Science and play rugby, though he declined the opportunity due to personal reasons.

In addition to Rugby 15’s, Pradillo also represented Mexico in Rugby 7’s, competing in the 2012 Pan American Games and the 2022 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In California, Pradillo played for the San Clemente Rhinos and participated in the Amateur Rugby World Cup in 2023. In the same year, he played for the San Diego Centurions, and in 2024, he was invited to play for Kahurangi Rugby Club in New Zealand, winning the Division One trophy in July.

Mexican Rugby Federation Endorses Alejandro Pradillo’s Signing

The Mexican Rugby Federation celebrates Alejandro Pradillo’s signing as the first Mexican rugby player to join a Major League Rugby team in the United States. “We hope this is the first step toward a direct collaboration between Mexican Rugby and MLR. We are proud of the Mexican representation that San Diego Legion Rugby will have with Alejandro Pradillo,” said Ernesto Sainz, President of the Mexican Rugby Federation.

San Diego Legion Rugby appreciates the support from the Mexican Rugby Federation in making this historic signing possible. Pradillo will begin his first campaign with San Diego Legion in 2025.

San Diego Legion Rugby se complace en anunciar la firma de Alejandro Pradillo, el primer jugador mexicano en la historia de la Major League Rugby (MLR). Nacido en la Ciudad de México y criado en el Estado de México, Alejandro descubrió su pasión por el rugby en la escuela Greengates a los 13 años. Después de años de representar a México en niveles juveniles y senior, está emocionado de unirse a los Legion como pilar y de inspirar a la próxima generación de jugadores de rugby mexicanos. Pradillo declaró: “Convertirme en el primer jugador mexicano en la MLR es un sueño hecho realidad. Quiero inspirar a otros y demostrar que todo es posible con trabajo duro y dedicación.”

Carrera de Rugby de Alejandro Pradillo

Alejandro Pradillo comenzó a jugar rugby a los 13 años en la escuela internacional Greengates, donde ganó los torneos de las categorías U16 y U19 en el Campeonato Nacional de Rugby de México. Tras su primera experiencia en el rugby en México, Pradillo viajó a Inglaterra para enfrentarse a los ganadores de los torneos colegiales de la región de Londres, donde fue nombrado MVP de la escuela Greengates.

Representó a México en los equipos nacionales U16 y U19 de Rugby XV, compitiendo en el Campeonato de la Liga de Rugby de América del Norte, donde fue nombrado el mejor delantero durante dos años consecutivos.

Pradillo dio sus primeros pasos en el rugby profesional con el Wallabies RFC de México a los 16 años, con los que ganó cinco campeonatos nacionales entre 2008 y 2013. También se le ofreció una beca para estudiar Ciencias del Deporte y jugar rugby en el Hartpury College del Reino Unido, pero rechazó la oportunidad por motivos personales.

Además del Rugby XV, Pradillo también representó a México en Rugby 7's, participando en los Juegos Panamericanos de 2012 y en los Juegos Centroamericanos y del Caribe de 2022.

En California, Pradillo jugó para los San Clemente Rhinos y participó en la Copa Mundial de Rugby Amateur en 2023. Ese mismo año jugó para los San Diego Centurions, y en 2024 fue invitado a jugar para el club Kahurangi Rugby en Nueva Zelanda, con quienes ganó el trofeo de la División Uno en julio.

La Federación Mexicana de Rugby respalda la firma de Alejandro Pradillo

La Federación Mexicana de Rugby celebra la firma de Alejandro Pradillo como el primer jugador de rugby mexicano que tendrá la oportunidad de formar parte de un equipo de la Major League Rugby en los Estados Unidos. “Esperamos que este sea el primer paso para que el rugby mexicano tenga una colaboración directa con la MLR. Estamos orgullosos de la representación mexicana que San Diego Legion Rugby tendrá con Alejandro Pradillo”, declaró Ernesto Sainz, presidente de la Federación Mexicana de Rugby.

San Diego Legion Rugby agradece todo el apoyo brindado por la Federación Mexicana de Rugby para lograr la firma del primer jugador mexicano en la historia de la MLR. Pradillo comenzará su primera temporada con San Diego Legion en 2025.
