Charlie Purdon, the Head Coach of the University of San Diego, has been appointed the Lead Coach of the Legion Community Foundation. Having played rugby professionally for Natal Sharks age-grade teams, Edinburgh ‘A’ and the San Diego Breakers, Purdon also brings a decorated coaching resume to Legion, where he will be focusing on the Legion Academy, in addition to applying his wealth of expertise and knowledge to both the community and performance development pathways.

Purdon has an extensive history in rugby in Southern California, where he has played for Pacific Rugby Premiership clubs Santa Monica and OMBAC, while his previous coaching roles include Cathedral Catholic and Coastal Dragons Rugby. He also runs rugby camps with twice World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, Perry Baker, and is also the lead coach of performance at Proteus Athlete.

"Charlie will bring a wealth of knowledge to Legion across, not only all aspects of the game, but also all levels of the game. His community relationships will aid us in creating viable pathways through to our pro team” says Danny Lee, Head Coach of the San Diego Legion.

Purdon says “I am extremely passionate about the San Diego rugby community - they have been so good to me since I arrived here in 2016. I am very excited to continue facilitating the development of aspiring players and the sport in a more professional sense through the Legion Community Foundation. Additionally, I feel privileged to be able to continue my own professional development as a coach under SDL Head Coach Danny Lee [and SDL Assistant Coaches] Jack Wiggins and Scott Murray.”
