Cecil Afrika attended Hentie Cilliers High School in Virginia, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Afrika represented the South African Schoolboys in 2006. He was part of the South African U20 squad in the 2008 IRB Junior World Championship, reaching the third place playoffs. Debuting for South Africa in the IRB World Series 2009, he became the prominent attacking threat on the circuit. In 2011, he was the top try and point scorer, which led to winning the IRB International Sevens Player of the Year award. His ability to create and finish, he helped the SA Sevens team to Gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. At the 2016 Olympics, his experience and abilities shined through again by leading his squad to a Bronze medal.
